The Cleveland Public Theatre's next production is Saul Ansky's The Dybbuk, a classic drama of the Eastern European Yiddish Theatre. In Jewish lore, a dybbuk is an evil spirit, a demon or a restless soul of a dead person that resides in the body of a living person. Ansky's play, set in the Hasidic environment of a small Eastern European town in the late 19th century, tells the story of the controversial love of two young people from different social classes. The Dybbuk is a vital and thrilling tale that examines mysticism and tradition, the sacred and the profane. It celebrates the beauty and depth of Jewish culture. Cleveland Public Theatre continues its ongoing series of Monday staged readings on November 15 at 8 pm with "After Midnight," by members of the Cleveland Playwrights Workshop. The reading will consist of six short works, approximately fifteen minutes each, dealing with events that occur at midnight within an apartment house setting. Playwrights represented include Mike Sepesey, Sid Turkington, Jim Kuth, Margi Haas, Bob Woodward, and Barbara LaBel.

Audience members will be solicited for opinions and comment following each of the readings. The admission is $1.

CPT is also holding auditions for its February production of Keith Curran's Walking the Dead, directed by Amanda Shaffer. Walking the Dead is a funny, tragic, insightful new work exploring gay, lesbian and transsexual issues in our increasingly homophobic society. It is the story of one person's journey and how an individual's choices affect ripples of change in other people's lives. Seven parts are to be cast, requiring: two white actresses, one late twenties, one fiftyish; one African-American actress, fortyish; three white actors, two in their twenties, one in his forties; and one AfricanAmerican actor in his thirties. Auditions begin at 7 pm sharp on Monday, November 22 and Tuesday, November 23. A prepared piece is appreciated but not required. Scripts will be available one-half hour prior to the auditions. Guerilla Theatre Company is opening its second season with a new socially relevant cabaret, Mind Your Own Business. The production promises audience participation and a chance to win "fabulous" prizes. Admission is $7 and is reduced to $5 if you come to the theater bearing or wearing something pertaining to the "Theme of the Weekend." This theme can be found out by calling Guerilla Connection, the company's 24-hour info-line at 574-9003. Mind Your Own Business opens on November 19 and will be performed at the Actors' Gym, 2393 Professor Street, on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and 11 pm.
